wire

my dad showed me how to repair wires when i was little, and it's nearly become a hobby of mine. editing wires is very useful for:

damaged wires can shock you and even start fires, but--instead of throwing them out--you can reduce waste by fixing them! at the very least, you should cover exposed wires with electrical tape for your own safety.

and so, between my pixel art and hag lore ramblings, i present to you... totally random wire repair tutorial!

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

STEP I: first, ensure that the wire is not connected to an energy source. cut off the damaged portion(s) so that you have neat material to work with.

if there's multiple separately-encased wires involved, it's important to not connect one wire to a different wire. they each have different purposes and are usually color-coded or marked in some other way.

the specimen today is comprised of two separate wires that are conjoined at the sides of their casings. pictured below, i've already stripped and reconnected one of the wires.

STEP II: strip the casing off the wire(s). you'll want a good amount of stripped wire to create a secure connection.

a wire stripper tool makes it a lot easier. otherwise, the scissors can be used to very carefully make incisions to free the metal wires inside.

STEP III: now you'll have the metal portion to work with. since these belong to a single wire (out of the two), they will be twisted together neatly so that they cannot be pulled apart AND, very importantly, will not touch the other wire.

basically, i try to match the length of the finished wire and create an "x" at the convergence spot. i then twist them together, then wrap it around itself.

STEP IV: take a piece of electrical tape to wrap each wire individually. they MUST be insulated from one another. in other words, metal from one wire CANNOT be touching the metal of another wire.

STEP V: last, i do an outer wrap diagonally to secure it even more.
